Foreclosures: Issues that are Apparent to the Eye
Some problems with foreclosure properties—especially ones that have been vacant for long periods—are as plain as day. Many are common to homes in certain regions of the country. Be sure to keep be on the lookout for these problems when shopping in the foreclosure market.
Many foreclosure homes aren’t as vacant as they seem. Rodents, cats, and other critters have been known to occupy homes once the human residents leave. Overgrown yards (which also present a fire hazard) can become fertile territory for backyard burrowers such as raccoons and prairie dogs.
Some of the damage to foreclosure properties is often wrought by the former owner/occupiers, distraught at being forced to vacate property they still consider their own. Some people steal fittings and fixtures when they are forced to leave due to a foreclosure. Others damage their homes out of frustration and a sense of vengeance. This is why you should be sure you check the condition of the house before you bid.
